Sydney is set to play host to a significant national commemoration event this February, marking 35 years since the end of the 1990–91 Gulf War, with veterans, families and supporters expected to gather in the city’s Darling Harbour precinct. The Australian Gulf War Veterans Association (AGWVA) will stage the event at the Australian National Maritime Museum on Saturday 28 February 2026, coinciding with the anniversary of the cessation of hostilities.
The occasion is billed as a night of remembrance, celebration and connection as the community reflects on more than three decades since Australia’s contribution to the international coalition effort in the Persian Gulf. It is intended as a milestone gathering for those who served under Operation Damask in response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in August 1990.
Australia’s involvement in the conflict saw more than 1,800 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel deployed across naval, air, and support roles, contributing to maritime interdiction, logistics, and humanitarian tasks. The legacy of this service continues to resonate within veteran communities and their families.
The event aims to create a dignified atmosphere that honours service and acknowledges the personal sacrifices of those involved and their extended support networks.
The AGWVA was formally established in 2025 as a national body representing Gulf War veterans, and prioritises welfare, advocacy, and the preservation of shared history. In the lead-up to the commemoration, the association has emphasised the importance of community participation in safeguarding the stories and experiences of those who served.
This national gathering also offers an opportunity for families of veterans and the wider public to engage with the narratives of service that shaped Australia’s modern military engagements. Through exhibitions and memorabilia, the event will highlight facets of the conflict that are less known to the broader Australian community.
Tickets for the 35th anniversary event are available with proceeds supporting charitable causes in line with the platform’s mission. As the date approaches, organisers hope the event will serve as both a tribute to the steadfastness of Gulf War veterans and a moment of collective acknowledgement of their enduring contributions to peace and security.
